Yaounde: Some Presidential Election Candidates Call for Calm

All eyes on Cameroon’s October 9, 2011 presidential election are now on the Supreme Court acting as the Constitutional Council, where the results will be made known in the coming days. The Constitutional Council will  October 19, also rule on the 20 petitions tabled by some candidates and political parties in the election, calling for the total or partial cancellation of the election results.

Candidates who contested in the race to the Etoudi Presidential Palace are however divided on how to tackle the post-election period. Seven candidates on monday, October 17 in Yaounde during a press conference, rejected the election results, called on the Constitutional Council to cancel the election and promised demonstrations, should the Council go ahead to announce the election results.

Many other candidates who talked to Cameroon Tribune said the law should follow its course. They said they believe and have faith in State institutions and are awaiting in serenity, the final announcement of election results by the Constitutional Council. The leaders however admitted flaws and hitches in the electoral process. They want the authorities to take responsibility and called on Cameroonians to remain calm, peaceful and shun acts that might create disorder and jeopardise national cohesion.
