Former Nigerian President at Star Building

Prime Minister Philemon Yang yesterday granted separate audiences to the new Belgian Ambassador, Herman Merckx and the former Nigerian President, General Yakubu Gowan.

The Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang, yesterday, February 17 had discussions with a seven-member delegation led by the former Nigerian President, General Yakubu Gowan. As a preacher now, General Gowan is in Cameroon to give support to the Impact Group, a religious movement, as they organise their conference in Cameroon called “Impact Cameroon 2010”.

General Yakubu Gowan came to brief the Prime Minister on the Impact Group which sets out to pray and transform nations by promoting peace, patriotism among citizens and harmony within the country and between neighbours as well as join in development efforts. He expressed happiness that the Bakassi conflict between Cameroon and Nigeria was resolved peacefully and promised to build on the good relations between the two countries dating as far back as the 1960s.

Later in the afternoon, the new Belgian Ambassador to Cameroon, Herman Merckx with residence in Brazzaville, Congo said he would want to see Cameroon’s cultural riches better known in Europe and the already good political and economic relations between the two countries intensified. The Belgian diplomat, accompanied by their Consul to Cameroon, Caroline Mouchart, was speaking in an interview after an audience with the Prime Minister, Philemon Yang. The audience focused on seeking ways of fostering cooperation.

Herman Merckx stated that relations between Cameroon and Belgium were good both at the bilateral and multilateral levels. He said they discussed the execution of ongoing projects in Cameroon financed with Belgian State loans. He cited the drainage at the Douala Port, rehabilitation of the Pont d’ Enfance in the Centre Region and radar equipment in ports. The Belgian government he said, wanted clarifications from Cameroon with regard to the ministry in charge of handling projects, considering that when loan conventions between the two countries were signed five years ago, it was the Ministry of the Economy and Finance but now the ministry has been split into the ministries of Finance and that of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development. He said the Prime Minister promised the Belgian government will be officially informed of the fact that the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Regional Development is in charge of projects. The diplomat said they also discussed on the recent Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) summit that held in Bangui.
