Parliament : MPs Ready to Vote New Bureau

Work will only proceed in the ongoing March 2010 session of Parliament after the election of the permanent bureau.
Since the March ordinary session of the National Assembly for the 2010 legislative year started, Monday, March 1, members of parliament are waiting to elect the permanent bureau that will pilot the affairs of the institution for the entire year. The provisional bureau, chaired by the eldest member of parliament present, Hon. P.C. Fonso of the opposition Social Democratic Front (SDF), assisted by the two youngest parliamentarians has been coordinating activities while waiting for the election of the permanent bureau. The mandate of the provisional bureau will end once the permanent bureau is put in place.

In the interim, MPs are doing their private businesses and also visiting ministries to verify the progress of files on public investment projects destined for their respective constituencies. Hon. Wallang Richard, the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) MP for Menchum in the North West Region said they did not yet know when the permanent bureau of the National Assembly for the legislative year will be elected. “We are ready to vote the bureau at any time the elective plenary sitting is convened. At the Ngoa-Ekelle National Assembly Glass House yesterday, some MPs could be spotted visiting offices.

Real business on who to be part of the National Assembly bureau for the 2010 legislative year, is now at the level of political party headquarters. This is because with respect to tradition, leaders of political parties represented at the National Assembly, designate their MPs to occupy positions in the permanent bureau of the House. The election of the permanent bureau will pave the way for the constitution of the various committees whose responsibility is to scrutinise bills before they are tabled to the entire House during plenary sitting for examination and adoption.
