MTN Elite One : Cotonsport-Union Duel Ahead

It will be the top match of the 17th day of play this weekend.
The main stake of the 17th day of play will be to find out whether there will ne any changes on the classification table given that the status quo was maintained after the 16th day of play. Another question is whether Union of Douala who has been facing dwindling fortunes in the national championship will be able to make a come-back in the competition or continue its downward trend. On the other hand, Cotonsports will be seeking to further consolidate its grasp on the championship by further widening the leadership margin.

Also of interest, will the performance of the runners, Panthere Bagante and Unisports of Upper Nkam, whether they will be able to close the gap between them and league leaders or allow the team from the North to go solo at the helm of the classification table.

Though Cotonsport of Garoua was slowed down in her bid for the championship title this year by third placed, Unisport of Bafang on the 16th day of play, the status quo was maintained on the league table owing to similar draws recorded by the runners-up. The cotton weavers were held to a one-all draw which narrows the leadership margin from 13 to 11 points.

There were no major changes in the middle of the classification either. Owing to the defeat against Sable, Fovu moved one place down closer to relegation occupying the 10th position with 17 points.

At the bottom of the league table, the victory of AS Matelots over Union Douala was not enough to enable them leap out of the relegation zone. But it takes them closer given that they are now on 17 points together with Renaissance, Fovu and Ngaoundere University. It is the same case for Roumdé Adja who despite accomplishing the extra ordinary feat of beating Renaissance 1-0, still occupies the bottom position.

In the latest development, the match counting for the 14th day of play between Roumdé Adja and Tiko United that was postponed due to the involvement of the latter in the African champion’s league was played on Wednesday with Roumdé Adja recording their second victory in a row against the defending champions. Roumdé Adja edged Tiko United 1-0 but still remain at the bottom of the league table.
