MTN Elite One : Coton Sport Proves Invincible

They came back from a one goal deficit to defeat Union 2-1 on the 17th day of play over the weekend.
Coton Sport Garoua has maintained her lead in the ongoing national division one championship by obtaining yet an umpteenth victory against Union Douala on the 17th day of play on Sunday. Though Union took an early lead in the encounter, Coton Sport miraculously came from behind to carry the day on a 2-1 score. The victory against Union in Garoua further consolidates Coton Sport’s lead on the championship where they tower high with a 13-point margin from the runners up. Coton Sport therefore goes solo at the helm of the league table with 42 points, followed by Panthere, Astres and Unisport in that order on 29 points but separated by goal difference.

While it has been good fortunes for Coton Sport, Union of Douala whose hopes of recording a victory in four matches was thwarted by Cotonsport at the eleventh hour, are in difficulties. Victory for Union would have raised hope for an eventual comeback into the competition but the defeat which is the fourth in a row further plunges the club into disarray. Union’s performance in the championship this season is a course for concern given that they are one of Cameroon’s representatives in the prestigious African champion’s league. However, Liverpool won the European champions league without featuring among the first three in the English league, so, Union Douala can as well have a bad season in the domestic league and excel at the continental stage.

While Cotonsport is marching forward in their bid to win the championship title this year, the runners-up seem to be marking time with a series of disappointing draws which have enabled Cotonsport to increase her leadership margin from 9 to 11 and now 13 points. Another course for concern is that of the defending champions, Tiko United equally involved in continental competitions and yet putting up a dismal performance in the MTN Elite One competition. Though they fell 0-2 to Astres Douala, this did not cause any upset in the classification table given that the status quo is maintained with Tiko in the 5th position with 28 points.

There is no change at the bottom of the table either where Roumde Adja slumped down after two impressive victories on the 15th and 16th day of play which raised hope that the club from the North region was going to ebb out of the relegation zone. Same for Matelots and Fovu, who continue lurking in the danger area without any signs of making an upward movement soon.
