New Bomaka Chief to Pursue Culture

After eight years of chieftaincy vacancy, HRH Chief Kombe Masua Jonathan was enthroned and officially installed recently at his Bomaka Palace as a Third Class Chief. The population of Bomaka, administrative and traditional authorities as well as a cross section of workers at the Limbe City Council, led by the Government Delegate, Andrew Mutanga Mojimba and, witnessed the coronation and official installation of His Royal Highness Chief Kombe Masua Jonathan as a 3rd Class Chief of Bomaka recently. After libation rites by some Buea Chiefs, the reading of a unanimous letter from the Bomaka Traditional Council confirmed the chief’s selection. It stated that the inhabitants of Bomaka have lived without a leader since the death of the former Chief on January 02, 2002. The letter equally highlighted problems faced by the community like un-tarred roads, lack of refuse disposal cans, no street lights, etc. The Nganya and Malay cultural dance groups led the new Chief into the traditional hut where he was prepared for his first encounter with his people. After this exercise, the President of the Buea Traditional Chiefs’ Council, HRH Chief Linonge Francis Kinge, explained that the eight-year lapse was meant to verify if the new Chief fulfilled all the requirements of the Bakweri tradition. "Chief Kombe’s success therefore, paves his way into the Bakweri Chiefs’ clan, where he is expected to promote development through collaboration with other Chiefs and uphold traditional values," he said.

Addressing the crowd, the outgoing DO of Buea, Simon Kwemo, explained that Chief Kombe was unanimously chosen by the King Makers and presented to the administration on February 05, 2010. He equally congratulated the Bomaka population for the calm and patience through out eight years without a Chief. The reading of prefectoral order recognising of the new Chief, was followed by the presentation of the Chief to his people.

Born on November 13, 1958 in Bomaka, Chief Kombe Masua Jonathan received primary and secondary education from schools in the then South West Province. He obtained a diploma in General Crop and Animal Husbandry from the Royal Training Centre, Kumba in 1979. He served at Menyoli Star Brush from 1979-80 and obtained a job with the national oil refinery, SONARA from 1980-82. He later moved to the then Limbe Council, present day Limbe City Council, where he works from 1988 till date. He is married and a father of three.
