Serbia Seeks Cooperation with Cameroon

Prime Minister Philemon Yang on August 20 received the Serbian special envoy with a sealed message for onward transmission to the Head of State. Serbia’s Ambassador to the African Union and Ethiopia, Dragan Momcilovic says his country wants to come to Cameroon to establish relations in diplomacy, agriculture, technology transfer, infrastructure and education. Dragan Momcilovic on Friday, August 20 handed a sealed message from the Serbian President Boris Tadic to Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Philemon Yang for onward transmission to the Head of State, Paul Biya.

The Serbian special envoy disclosed to the press after the audience with the Prime Minister that their discussions centred on his country’s intention to come and establish cooperation ties with Cameroon. “We talked about the possibilities of developing certain sectors”, Dragan Momcilovic said and disclosed that Serbia is an important producer of some agricultural products like maize and flowers and plans to transfer the technology to Cameroon. He said Cameroon has excellent conditions to develop agriculture, tourism and infrastructure projects and stated, “Serbia is building highways and other infrastructure projects in Africa and Cameroon has to take the opportunity”.

“The second aspect of the cooperation could be the coming of Serbian leaders to visit Cameroon”, the special envoy said, while revealing that the Serbian President and Prime Minister were planning some African tours to develop cooperation in concrete terms. The Serbian government has been offering scholarships to students in some African countries and, would want to include Cameroonian students to come their capital city, Belgrade for studies, Dragan Momcilovic said.

The Serbian government, according to the special envoy, is opposed to the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo. This was one of the key topics of discussion with the Prime Minister Yang. He said that during the UN General Assembly meeting coming up in September they will try to discuss the problem and “open negotiations with Albanians to try to make a sort of deal”. Kosovo is part of Serbia that decided to secede by unilaterally declaring independence.
