New School Year: Parents in Rush to Register Children At Douala

There are all kinds of adverts around town from some schools to lure parents to register their children.

The new school year is around the corner and parents are rushing to get their children registered giving that it is just one week to the start of the new school year. Those parents who had not done so are under heat now to get space for their children especially in the government institutions. Most of the parents found around school premises are those whose children are to get into form one and they have not yet been registered. But there are a few parents who want to either change schools for their children because they either repeated or were dismissed or failed the GCE.

Around town there are institutions which have placed banners, flyers advertising their institutions to lure parents to come and register their children to such institutions. Most of these schools are either new schools or existing schools which have not been very popular. One of the parents who spoke with CT at Lycee Cite des Palmiers said his son did not succeed in the entrance exam to form one and so he is struggling to get space for him. He added that he was asked to submit the documents of the child with the sum of FCFA 100,000. He added that he does not even have this kind of money and does not know how to proceed. He said there are banners and even flyers he has seen but he is not moved because he wants his son to study in a government institution.

Another Parent Rita Asaba said most of these flyers are for private institutions and she does not want a situation where they would tell her that the school is clandestine and besides she prefers a government institution because they have well trained teachers. An administrative official told CT that in government schools, registration has been halted because there is installation of Principles and registration can only commence again on Monday September 6, and this situation is getting parents very worked up because classes must have begun. A parent said he has not succeeded to secure space for two of his children.
