Sports Journalists Evaluate Activities In Buea

Keynote presentations, a football match and excursions crowned the annual general assembly meeting.

The annual general assembly meeting of the Cameroon Association of Sports Journalists (CASJ) was held in Buea from Friday August 27 to Sunday August 29, 2010. The meeting, hosted in Molyko, brought together sports journalists from both public and private media houses nationwide. The opening ceremony was chaired by the Governor’s representative, Alfred Ngale Meende, Chief of Cabinet at the South West Regional Governor’s Office.

Alfred Ngale Meende lauded the efforts by sports journalists in identifying and exposing sports professionals in their different fields. He encouraged CASJ members to continue collaborating with state institutions like the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education (MINEP), in order to make their strides vibrantly felt.

CASJ South West President and host, Matute Menyoli, in his welcome note, explained the origin of the Regional Chapter. Previously under the Littoral Region, he said, the CASJ South West Chapter was created following the July 2009 annual general assembly meeting in Bamenda , North West Region. He noted that CASJ South West has organised training sessions for Rugby and Basketball reporting, in an attempt aimed at ungrading reporters’ mastery of sports rules and language.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Gustav Samnick, CASJ National President, said the general assembly's objective was to review field activities through out the previous years, as well as set a roadmap for the upcoming year. In order to effectively realize their goal, he stressed, CASJ has created 10 different National Coordinating Units. Other activities include the organization of training sessions on volleyball reporting (September 2009), another on sports photographing (September/October 2009), a campaign against drugs in the sports milieu (July 2009), and recently the “United against Malaria” campaign (May 2010), amongst others. Emmanuel Gustav lauded efforts by both the state and benevolent stakeholders, without which, he said, these activities would not have been realized.

The general assembly was also marked by a football match, excursions to the Tiko United Headquarter, the Njalla Quan Sports Academy in Limbe, and courtesy visits to some traditional dignitaries.
