SDF: Voter registration threaten to split NEC members

Party Chairman, Fru Ndi expected to lead SDF delegation to ELECAM consultations.

The thorny issue whether SDF militants should register towards the 2011 Presidential elections was topical in the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) session of September 4th and 5th, 2010 in Bamenda with dissenting voices that almost split NEC into camps. Deliberations are said to have degenerated into rowdiness causing the presiding party Chairman, Ni John Fru Ndi to suspend the subject. It emerged from the session that members, summed up in extremists and theorists differed in opinions with some categorical about registration as the way forward against stiff opposition from others while some argue that “the SDF is not boycotting elections but no elections under current conditions with ELECAM”. Pressmen retired from the event in the Ntarinkon residence of Chairman, Fru Ndi with the party’s Communication Officer, Beatrice Anembom Munjo unable to say whether militants should register or not. In effect, while militants appear at a loss about the way forward all that Beatrice Anembom Munjo had to offer was,“ We are not saying that militants should register and we are not saying they should not register”. Comewhat may, it emerged from the corridors that Chairman, Fru Ndi is expected to lead an SDF delegation to honour an invitation by ELECAM in the days ahead.

Cameroon Tribune also got it that NEC has a Strategic Committee to decide on the way forward towards elections. While a wait and see attitude is advised NEC also resolved to sanction any militant caught flirting with ELECAM.. The Press also took home an unsigned list of 11 SDF conditions to guarantee acceptable elections with the party asking for the appointment of new Council and Directorate members into ELECAM, the exclusion of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization from ELECAM, the inclusion of participating political parties at all decision making levels and in all Commissions charged with the organization and conduct of elections, a ban on public officials and civil Servants from campaigns during elections, the participation of the Diaspora in the electoral process etc. Away from that, it also emerged from the corridors of the NEC meeting that the party is considering legal action to restrain ELECAM from the registration of voters towards imminent electoral consultations.
