UK Grants FCFA 48 million to Cameroon NGOs For Dev’t Projects

The British High Commission to Cameroon has granted FCFA 48 million to civil society organisations in Cameroon to help tackle corruption, human rights abuse, conflict, insecurity and climate change. High Commissioner Bharat Joshi on Tuesday September 21, 2010 signed contracts with leaders of six civil society organisations within the context of the UK’s Challenge Fund for High Impact Projects in Cameroon to be completed by March 2011. The innovative projects will help children grow up to shun corruption and protect their environment, give communities the knowledge and confidence to audit their councils and support social programmes to foster peace and security in Bakassi and the Far North Region. Some funding has also been provided to promote the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS in the Adamawa Region.

The High Commissioner said “We support the development of Cameroon into a stable and prosperous nation. These projects will help in the delivery of these simple, yet important objectives”.

Beside this structured approach to supporting development, the UK moved fast to help tackle the cholera outbreak in the Far North with FCFA 106 million support-package approved last month. Britain also supports Cameroonians through various educational grants.
