Striking Declarations By World Leaders at the MDGs Summit

Compiled by SHEY Peter MABU in New-York

Cameroon: President Paul Biya

- Energy resources facilitate not only increased agricultural production, but also water supply and the development of income-generating activities for the poorest segments of the population, in particular, women.

- We cannot reasonably achieve the MDGs without addressing the challenge of Employment. Indeed employment is more than ever before a crucial factor in alleviating poverty and fostering personal dignity, collective wellbeing sustainable economic growth, unquestionably the political stability of our states.

Morocco: His Majesty King Mohammed

- In a spirit of responsibility and frankness, we should use this meeting to pause and make an objective assessment of what has been accomplished, determine the obstacles that need to be overcome and devise strategies needed to achieve the MDGs by the year 2015.

- Can the conscience of mankind remain indifferent to the plight of more than one billion people who continue to suffer from hunger, and to the millions of children who die annually from malnutrition as well as from diseases and epidemics for which treatment is both available and affordable. ‘’Certainly not’’

- I believe a firm commitment made by all our countries and supported by a global, specific partnership mechanism with a clear implementation time table, provides the best guarantee for achieving millennium Dev. Goals.

Co. Chair of MDGs Summit: H.E Dr. Ali Abdussa-Lam Treki of Libya

- To improve the lives of hundreds of millions of people through better health care, better access to clean water and sanitation, empowering women and girls through programs to conserve and protect the environment, hundreds of billions of dollars are needed.

- While the MDGs are an ambitious framework, still they form only part of the conditions needed for change. Development assistance can accomplish so much.

Liberia:

Her Ex. Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf

- The MDGs are universal but their impact will be greatest in the world’s poorest nations, mainly those of Sub-Sahara Africa, like my country Liberia.

- We need rapid, stable and sustainable growth that creates jobs, especially for youth and in sectors that benefit the poor and expands opportunities for women.

The Holy See:

His Eminence Cardinal Peter K.A. Turkson

- Countless innocent victims whole populations, have been kept in the wake of the international financial crisis. The unethical and irresponsible conduct of large financial operators, together with lack of foresight and control by governments and the international community have played a role. Excessive nationalism and corporate self interest as well as old and new ideologies, fomenting wars and conflicts are obstacles to development.

Namibia:

H.E. President Hifikepu Nye Pohamba

- Many developing nations have made encouraging progress towards the achievement of the MDGs. However, it is cause for concern that in many instances, there is an uneven progress and unresolved challenges.

- By working together we can achieve the millennium development goals.

Tunisia: H.E. Mr. Kamel Morjane,

Minister of Foreign Affairs

- Projections for African countries which register a growth rate below 3 per cent are still expecting a growth rate of 7 per cent. Such a rate is still too low to help these countries realize millennium development goals.

- We call upon the G8 and the G20 to renew their commitment towards the African continent to attain its development goals.

Kingdom of Swaziland:

His Majesty King Mswati III

- Developing countries are faced with challenges such as job creation, unemployment, attracting and retaining direct foreign investment while promoting local investment and strengthening agro-business. We also need to improve our manufacturing sector, tourism, and small and medium size enterprises.

- One of the crucial ways towards the eradication of extreme poverty is to stimulate agricultural development.

Mozambique: Minister of Foreign,

Affairs and Cooperation

Investing in women and children’s health is investing in the survival of a nation.

Mauritius:

H.E. Dr. Hon. Arrin Boolell Foreign Affairs & Regional Integration and International Trade

The destiny of developing and the developed world in an interdependent world, and a globalized economy is inextricably linked, and therefore short term stabilization must protect the poor and long term measures. To ensure sustainable financial flows to developing countries.

From the various statements by the leaders, it comes out clear that there is need for assistance, employment, empowerment of women, education of youths, improvement of agriculture, infrastructure, energy and water resources, trade, industrialization, and concerted efforts with effective cooperation between nations of the world.
