Avec les épouses de chefs d’Etat, Chantal Biya a pris part hier à un thé offert par l’épouse du Secrétaire général des Nations unies.

Ballet de premières dames hier après-midi au 3, Sutton Place, sur la 57è rue à New-York. Un déploiement inhabituel des services de sécurité indiquait bien qu’il se passait quelque chose de spécial à la résidence du Secrétaire général des Nations unies. Les voisins et les passants eux, ont eu droit à un défilé d’épouses de chefs d’Etat, rivalisant d’élégance. La première dame camerounaise, Chantal Biya y est allée de sa partition, sacrifiant à ce qui est devenu un rituel depuis quelques années, à côté des travaux de l’Assemblée générale annuelle de l’Organisation des Nations unies.

La « Tea reception » offerte hier par Mme Ban Soon-Teak, épouse du Secrétaire général, a une fois de plus drainé du beau monde en cet après-midi ensoleillé de septembre. On vous parlait de Chantal Biya la Camerounaise. Mais il y avait aussi les présences très remarquées de Michelle Obama, la première dame américaine et son imposant cortège; Sylvia Bongo Ondimba, épouse du chef de l’Etat gabonais ; Simone Gbagbo, première dame de Côte d’ivoire ; ou encore Patience Jonathan de la République fédérale du Nigeria.

La réception à huis clos a duré environ une demi-heure. L’épouse du Secrétaire général de l’Organisation des Nations unies avait convié les épouses de chefs d’Etat présentes à New-York, pour un thé, quelques heures après l’ouverture du débat général de la 65è Assemblée générale. Et d’habitude, les premières dames saisissent l’opportunité de leur rencontre pour aborder avec leur regard, les grandes préoccupations du monde à l’heure actuelle. Et cette année, il est question de l’évaluation de l’atteinte des objectifs du millénaire. Mais aussi de sujets « traditionnels » comme les problèmes environnementaux, la santé de la mère et de l’enfant à travers le monde, la place des femmes…

Sur ce plan, l’épouse du SG des Nations unies défend fermement l’idée d’une synergie de l’action des premières dames. Les épouses des dirigeants de ce monde jouent un rôle de plus en plus marqué à travers les cinq continents. Mme Ban-Soon Teak a sans doute réitéré sa vision à ses hôtes hier après-midi : il importe de mettre ces forces en commun, pour plus d’impact encore. Les visages étaient détendus, à l’entrée comme à la sortie de la « Tea reception ». Signe que ces dames sont sur la même longueur d’ondes.

First Ladies On A Tea Outing

Cameroon’s First Lady took part in a tea reception yesterday in New York at the residence of the UN Secretary General.

2: 30 pm, New York time. Its time for First Ladies to set out for a “special” tea reception at the residence of the United Nations Secretary General located along the 3 Sutton Place on the 57 Street, down town New York. The street is extraordinarily crowded with the United States security men and women. The police sirens signal the arrival of special guests. As such traffic along the street is blocked for awhile. First Ladies who are accompanying their husbands for the 65th United Nations General Assembly in New York are making their way to the residence of the UN Secretary General. At the invitation of Mrs Ban Soon Taek, wife of the UN Secretary General, the First Spouses are about to participate in a special tea party void of snapshots and camera.

30 minutes before the tea party, First Ladies from all over the world began entering the residence of Mrs Ban Soon Taek. From a distance, one could figure out the arrival of the First Lady of Cameroon, Mrs Chantal Biya as well as the First lady of Nigeria, Gabon, Turkey, Sri-Lanka, Côte d’Ivoire and Austria. The arrival of the First Lady of the United States, Mrs Michelle Obama, Ladies certainly exchanged and shared ideas on what they are doing to assist their husbands in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which is one of the main reasons why their husbands are currently at the United Nations General Assembly Probably, the First Spouses talked about the role they have to play as women in helping their various governments in achieving the MDGs, particularly that of gender justice and poverty which has been regarded key element in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. This is in line with what the UN Secretary General said last June 2010 when he stated that “Social, political and economic equality for women is integral to the achievements of all MDGs. Until women and girls are liberated from poverty and injustice, all our goals - peace, security, sustainable development stands in jeopardy”.

The “Tea Reception” certainly was a unique occasion for the First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama, who is attending the United Nations General Assembly for the second time to salute the presence of other First Ladies in New York. Before the tea outing, the First Lady was present at the main conference hall of the UN for the opening of general debates at the United Nations General Assembly.
