Animal Market: A Mixture of Mud and Food Stuff

The road that leads to this market is bumpy and the market its self is so muddy.

Sometime ago, the Government Delegate to the Douala City Council described the market places as the spot for life, during one of his maiden tours to some markets in Douala. This is the reason why markets must be catered for and kept neat because all what we need comes from the market, such as food stuff, clothes among others, the government delegate said.

But if you take a stroll to the animal market at New Bell, it is a disgrace and a total contrast to what the Government Delegate is expecting to see in market places. The road that leads to the market is made up of very large potholes filled with standing rain water. As the rains persist the holes enlarge and circulation is horrible and difficult. The road is bumpy and very risky for pregnant women for they could loose their babies.

The market its self is not tarred nor have paved blocks. It is so muddy especially with the continuous rainfall. There are no good structures, but rickety shades built by the traders. When it is raining they have no hiding place but remain in the rain and cover their goods with plastic bags. This is one of the markets in Douala which is dirty because of the nature of the market. The traders do their best to keep it clean but the faeces of fowls and other animals slaughtered and sold there makes the market to have a constant stench.

In the areas where traders sell food stuff, some traders place the food stuff on low tables and those who sell sliced eru in basins on the ground and motor bikes passing on speed splashing mud in the basins and other vegetables sold around, big trucks wanting to pass through the market, bikes struggling to pass, pushing left and right no passage. The market is like a spot where a traditional dance has taken place, because there is mud everywhere.

It is necessary for the Douala II council or the Douala City council to take actions and make this market a befitting spot to sell food stuff and animals.
