Douala: Affluence in Travelling Agencies

With the suspension of bus drivers, some agencies have become overcrowded with more passengers.

Following a communiqué signed by the Minister of Transport on some bus drivers found wanting because they were involved in over speeding, the agencies have complied to the communiqué by suspending these drivers. Most of the agencies have six drivers suspended while there is an agency with up to 24 drivers suspended. This situation has caused some agencies to be almost void of passengers while there are some which are struggling to manage the crowd.

These drivers were identified by the radar which recorded their speed on the Douala-Yaounde highway. This highway has claimed so many lives in a short space of time and government had to do something about it. The Radar has been in existence but had been neglected. The ministry of Transport in doing road safety campaigns had to fall back on the Radar system and spring it to action.

When CT visited BUCA Voyage, most of the buses had already left for Yaounde and there were few people still waiting to board the next bus. The chief of agency said the Radar detected that the six drivers which they have suspended were involved in over speeding and so they have withdrawn their driving licences for one month. This suspension he said does not really affect them because they have replaced the six who are absent with other drivers.

At Guarantee Express which has the highest number of drivers suspended, the agency was almost void of passengers. But there were a few buses which had already boarded and ready to depart. “Passengers who have sentimental attachment for guarantee express will continue to use the bus in spite of the turbulence” side a passenger explained to CT.

At the douche municipal where there are a number of buses, which did not fall in the group fished out by the Minister of Transport or had just one driver suspended , the crowd could not be managed by FINEX Voyage which has taken other unidentified buses to board passengers for Yaounde. The situation is dangerous because if the car is found in over speeding it will not be identified as a bus which liaised with FINEX to board passengers. This agency has always had an advantage that the fare is cheaper than what is offered by other agencies, so the crowd has increased and they lack sufficient buses to transport their passengers to Yaounde.
