Buea: “Not My Will” Hits Stands

The recently launched Cameroonian movie centres drugs, alcohol and prostitution in and on University campuses.

Nalo, a University student, finds pleasure in hanging around with the big guys in town. She dumps her boyfriend, Weg, a painter by profession, in favour of a rich young man, Simon. Frequent outings to the biggest restaurants, shops and night clubs, as well as constant flow of cash from Simon blurred Nalo’s preoccupations about his income generating source. Not until she overhears a conversation, through which she discovers she is dating a scammer (cyber thief). She publicly humiliates him, and refuses all attempts for reconciliation. Though, the way out becomes difficult as Simon would not accept humiliation.

Set around campus life in the Buea University , “Not My Will” was launched recently at Chariot Hotel, in Buea. The film written, directed and produced by Weg Muler Efokoa, is a combination of action and musical performance. The plot deals with young people’s desire to acquire riches quickly and easily. Simon, a young man extorts huge sums of money through scamming a UK based Whiteman. He lives ostentatiously given that his wealth is ill gotten. This is characteristic of present day Cameroonian youths who adhere to such practices. Recently, a nationwide man hunt for scammers led to the arrest of many youths by Forces of Law and Order.

Another issue dealt with in “Not My Will” is the increasing rate of youth involvement in misdemeanours. In the movie, a killer is paid by Simon to kill Nalo. Unfortunately for him, Nalo’s frustrated brother was a rogue who in turn kills the former for attacking his sister. Drugs, alcohol, prostitution, insecurity, etc, are equally portrayed in the movie, with the aim of presenting a real picture of their negative outcome through the actors.

The film has a rich variety of musical performance by internationally acclaimed Cameroonian young musicians. Individuals like Achalle, Belle and groups like BAAM, Bright Phase, Y-A Squad etc, use their voices to sensitise youths on what they termed “You better be careful how you live.” It should be noted that “Not My Will” features people of different works of life, especially Buea based well known names. Among these are Charly Ndi Chia, Editor of “The Post Newspaper,” Constantine Mbom of STV, Fanteh Collins aka Stallone, Eka Christa, etc. the actors’ main motivation is to combat youths misconduct and pave a way for a batter future through movies.

“Not My Will” is Weg Muler first production in collaboration with blue drops studios, Molyko, Buea. He explained that there are many difficulties in producing a film in the Cameroonian context. He however encourages other film makers to work hard and make people believe in what they offer. The producer recommends both adults and youths to watch this educative movie, whereby they can easily identify with the story line. The launching ceremony was equally an opportunity for Weg to express his gratitude to all involved in the actual realisation of his first film ever.
