Bui roads degenerate and deteriorate

Kumbo (Bui) Roads leading to the Divisional headquarters Kumbo from Bamenda and those from the Subdivisions of Jakiri, Oku, Mbven, Noni and Nkum to Kumbo have degenerated and deteriorated in such a way that movements from such areas to Kumbo are a Herculean task.

The impassable situation of the roads here has impoverished the population the more and makes travelling now from one part to the other a prerogative of the rich. Can you imagine that the transport fare from Kumbo to Oku that is normally 1000 francs has gone up to 5.000 francs per passenger? That of Kumbo to Nkor Noni Subdivision that is 2000 francs per passenger has jumped to 3.000 francs while that of Kumbo to Mbiame that used to cost 1.000 francs has jumped to 2.000 francs. The same story can be told and be retold as the increase in transport fare applies also to Kumbo-Tatum Nkum road and Kumbo-Jakiri road. This ordeal has certainly come to add the burden of poverty on the population double.

In the wake of these impassable roads in the area the populations have not folded their arms to wait for manner to fall from heaven. The situation of the bad roads which is a stumbling block to our economic development does not only affect council roads but portions of the roads on our trunk A road. Examples abound like Jakiri Veterinary school and of tar to Jakiri CPDM party house, wan-Nkar and of tar to the bridge, Sop Kimar and Melim. The various administrative heads in collaboration with the mayors and traditional rulers of the area concerned, have mobilized their populations to turn out and work on the bad spots of the roads to enable the circulation of vehicles possible in the division. The situation of the roads has been worsened by heavy trucks, which refused to observe rain gates and continue to move on the roads when rain is falling.

Many thanks to the Senior Divisional Officer for Bui Mr. Ngone Ndodemesape Bernard who took a prefectural order to set up functional rain gates on the Jakiri Kumbo to regulate the movements of heavy trucks in his command unit whenever its rains. In spite of this prefectural order taken, some headstrong drivers of heavy trucks still violate it not withstanding the sanctions the prefectural order attracts. Of recent two drivers of the heavy trucks who violated the prefectural order were caught and detained and would be sanctioned according to the provisions of the prefectural order. Perhaps the only lasting solution to these our bad roads particularly Bamenda to Kumbo will be to tar the portions of the roads that are yet to be tarred as well as carried maintenance work on the earth roads
