Cameroon’s Airspace: Total Radar Coverage Recommended

Twenty two senior military officials and civilians have been trained to secure the country’s airspace.

Twenty two senior military officers and civilians working in the domain of air navigation have called on government to ensure the total radar coverage of Cameroon’s airspace and to train specialised personnel with modern techniques in airspace surveillance and detection. The officials ended a five-day training session at the Yaounde Combined Services Military Academy (EMIA), Friday, October 1 on the activation of Military air Surveillance and Detection Centres. Military sources say the Centres are in Yaounde for the First Military Region, Douala for the Second Military Region and Garoua for the Third Military Region.

The Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defence in charge of the National Gendermerie, Jean-Baptiste Bokam while presiding at the closing ceremony of the seminar called on strategic partners to create a synergy and collaborate with the Military Air Surveillance and Detection Centres. He said the training was in line with President Paul Biya’s determination to preserve peace and security in Cameroon and the entire Central African Sub-region.

The senior military officials better master their mission which is to assure the sovereignty of Cameroon’s airspace which cannot be achieved without air surveillance, air detection and air defence procedures. Air force fighter pilot, Major Ruben Colince Ondoua in an interview said with the radar, instead of planning missions on the ground, pilots can be directed on the air on ways of dealing with targets not previewed. As such, the trainees would want a proper coordination of the air surveillance and detection centres, training of specialised staff and a calendar of activities on activating the centres. They went home with participation testimonials.
