Commonwealth Games: Australia Consolidates Supremacy

After winning the 2006 edition of the games, they have once more taken a good option towards winning the 2010 Games.

With less than three days to go to the end of the 19th edition of the Commonwealth Games in India, Australia soars high on the medal tally sheet with 120 medals won so far. With close to 60 points ahead of the runners-up, India, Australia is well placed to emerge the overall winner of the Delhi Games. However, it is unlikely; Australia will hit the 221 medal target attained during the last edition of the games in Melbourne 2006.

Apart from the spectacular rise of the host country, India who have already surpassed the 50 medals won in Melbourne, the status quo has been maintained in the Games with the usually domination of countries like England, Canada, South Africa and to a lesser extent, Nigeria in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th positions respectively. England has not done as well as they did in 2006 when they won a total of 110 medals. However with three days to go to the end of the Games, it is still possible for them to meet the target given that they presently have 98 medals.

It has also been a dismal performance from the 21 athletes representing Cameroon at the games as only two have so far made the country proud. Delphine Atangana grabbed the first medal for Cameroon in 100m athletics race. The second was got by yet another lady, Ali Annabel Laure in wrestling freestyle 72kg. It would be recalled that Cameroon won six medals during the last edition of the Games, all in weightlifting. Cameroon is currently ranked 23rd on the medal tally with two silver medals won.
