Continental giants were either beaten or held to disappointing draws by the Lilliputians of African football.
The ongoing qualifiers for the African Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea 2012 are releasing astonishing results which if perpetuated will change the landscape of African football. Most of the continental giants were held back by little known teams in the second day qualifier matches that took place across the continent over the weekend. Reigning African champions, Egypt were beaten 1-0 by little known Niger. Nigeria that was present at the last World Cup in South Africa was also beaten on an identical score by Guinea. Other world cup participating nations that recorded disappointing results were South Africa held to a virgin draw by Sierra Leone. Ghana also played a goalless draw with Sudan while Cameroon separated on a one-all draw. However, the worst result recorded by a world cup nation was a zero to two defeat suffered by Algeria in the hands of the Central African Republic.
Cote D’Ivoire was the only team that was present at the World Cup in South Africa that recorded a victory this weekend. They beat Burundi 1-0.
With the results recorded, the margin between the top teams in Africa and the bottom teams is fast narrowing down and in the near future, it will be difficult to make the distinction between the favourites and underdogs.
