State Universities:Classes, Pre-Registration/Registration Going On

The 2010/2011 academic year is starting off with no major incident recorded in various State Universities.

State Universities in Cameroon are on the move with activities making the start of the 2010/2011 academic year. While others have already started classes for the first semester, there are other State Universities which are still carrying out pre-registration and registration. Despite the disparity in the unfolding of activities in State Universities, information from the Ministry of Higher Education indicates that classes for the first semester for the 2010/2011 academic year must be programmed to begin this October. At the Ministry of Higher Education, it is revealed that each university has its own school calendar although the beginning of any new academic year must be placed during the month of October. Thus, depending on when each university publishes it re-sit examination; they are free to begin classes on any date within the month of October.

While the Universities of Dschang and Douala have started effective classes alongside registration for late comers, the Universities of Buea and that Yaounde I in Ngoa-Ekele and II in Soa are yet to begin classes. Pre-registration and registration are still taking place in these institutions. Information gathered indicates that the University of Buea recently published the second list of first year students admitted into the institution. As such, the registration for first year students or “Johnny just come!” as they are popularly called, is currently taking place at the school premises. Although the University of Dschang has started classes, the Rector says a period of grace has been given to late comers to carry out registration. However, registration for students into professional programmes at the Universitiy of Dschang has ended. At the University of Yaounde II, classes have been slated to begin on October 18. Registration of new students is taking place at the school premises.

The situation at the University of Yaounde 1 seems different as the institution is still carrying out pre-registration of new students which started on August 23 and was supposed to end last September 30. It has been extended to the end of this month. According to statistics, some 35,000 new students usually drop applications for admission into the University of Yaounde I, amongst which some 25,000 are usually admitted. Registration for old students at the University of Yaounde I is expected to begin by the end of the month. No matter how unenthusiastic old students carryout their registration, all of them are expected to have completed registration before sitting in for the first semester examination. The calendar of activities at the University of Yaoundé I shows that classes are supposed to begin next week.
