Commonwealth Games: Cameroon Yearns for Gold

The 21 athletes representing Cameroon in athletics, boxing, weightlifting and wrestling have so far won one silver and three bronze.

With the curtains falling on 19th edition of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi tomorrow, Cameroon is yet gunning for their first ever gold medal in the competition. Though there has been a remarkable improvement in Cameroon’s performance in the competition as compared to the last edition of the games in Melbourne, Cameroon has never won a gold medal. In Melbourne Cameroon won a total of three medals; one silver and two bronze. But this time, Cameroon has won four medals; one silver and three bronze thereby surpassing their Melbourne record by one medal.

There are expectations that Cameroon will grab more medals before the competition runs out tomorrow as there are Cameroonian athletes still in contention for medals in boxing in the super heavy weight category and the 200m race in athletics. Cameroon missed a medal in weight lifting in the 75kg category when Nzessou Madias sustained an injury and was carried out on a stretcher.

Meanwhile Australia continues her solo ride at the helm of the medal classification table with a total of 143 medals won so far. They are followed by the host country in the second position with 81 medals. Though England has more medals than India, (111 medals), they occupy the third position because India has won more gold medals than England. India has 30 gold whereas England has 27. the status quo established during the last edition of the games in Melbourne prevails in that the same countries occupy the top of the medal tally. There has been an impressive performance from the other African countries like South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya who occupy the 5th, 6th and 7th positions respectively on the medal tally.

After initial complains about lack of preparation, low spectator turn out, doping has come to add to tarnish the image of the games. Samuel Okon, who was sixth in the 110m hurdles, becomes the second Nigerian to fail a drugs test at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
