Students’ Lodging:New Rents Rates Published

The text for the new rents for hostels in the University of Yaounde residential area was officially presented to journalists on thursday.

It was a special day at the Bonamoussadi students’ residential area yesterday. The Senior Divisional Officer for Mfoundi, Jean Claude Tsila, paid a visit to some hostels in the students’ residential area. The visit was immediately followed by a press briefing at the campus of the University of Yaounde 1. Jean Claude Tsila, who doubles as the president of the special unit for the examination of students’ housing conditions at the University of Yaounde 1 used the occasion to inform the press about measures they had taken to ensure that students study in good conditions.

Present at the occasion was the Rector of the University of Yaounde 1, Professor Oumarou Bouba, representatives of the Ministry of Higher Education, members of the forces of law and order as well as representatives of landlords. The purpose of the meeting was to present to journalist the results of the work done by the committee recently. The committee carried out a census and classified students’ hostels and fixed prices of each hostel according to the standards of the different buildings. According to the findings, a total of 702 hostels were identified. Work was also done on the demarcation of the university residential area into seven zones.

The rents, according to the text, range from FCFA 5250 to FCFA 15,000. The rooms are classified taking into consideration accessibility, cleanliness, security and comfort. The rents are homologated depending on four categories- very high standing cost 17,000 to 23,000, high standing 13,000 to 17,000 medium standing 8,500 to 13,000 and ordinary standing 4500 to 8000. Speaking briefly to the reporters, Jean Claude Tsila said the new rent rates have been done to favour students. He praised the special brigade for a job well done and wished that both the students and the landlords should respect the new rates for peace to reign in the students’ residential area. One of the representatives of the landlord’s association, Daniel Mbakop said the landlords will ensure reconciliation between the students and the landlords and will also ensure that both parties respect the new rates.
