Malpractice On Roads : Public Works Minister Threatens Defaulters

The Minister has issued a statement warning those who misuse public roads.

The Minister of Public Works, Bernard Messengue Avom has warned inhabitants and road users of the newly constructed Yaounde-Olama road on the Kribi highway, to stay-off acts that help degrade the road. He called on the nearby population to be observant and denounce vandals without which sanctions will be meted on them. In the statement signed last October 18, Mr Messengue Avom said, his Ministry has realised that there are malpractices at the stretch of road from Carrefour TKC to the bridge on the Mefou which will in the long run, help destroy the road. Amongst the malpractices, he noted the parking of vehicles and motorbikes on the greenery round-abouts, meant to beautify the roads, the unnecessary outflow of fuel and lubricants on the roads and also digging of roadsides to recover concrete.

Informed sources in the Ministry yesterday suggest that, stringent measures are being taken to ensure that road users, caught in acts of vandalism that reduce the life-span of the country’s road patrimony, will be punished as stipulated in Law N°96/07 of April 8, 1996. Companies with heavy-duty vehicles caught in any malpractices that would lead to the destruction of the country’s roads will also suffer the spell of the law. According to the Division of the Road Environment and Heritage of the Ministry of Public Works, the newly constructed Yaounde-Kribi road is one of the country’s heritages that deserve maximum protection.
