Chantal Biya Discovers UNESCO’s Heritage Sites

The First Lady used her time in Montreux visiting sites of world’s recognition alongside other First Spouses.

Over Lake Geneva, in a boat dubbed “Le Suisse”, which dates into 1895, Cameroon’s First Lady, Chantal Biya and a host of other First Spouses attending the 13th Francophonie summit in Montreux, toured Lake Geneva Region last Saturday, October, 23, discovering new horizons from the lakeside village of Vevey to high alpine stations, jura mountains to tranquil countryside while passing through the vineyards of Lavaux to visiting the “Domain des Faverges” at Chexbes which are all inscribed as UNESCO’s World Heritage of Humanity. The over-five-hour excursion of First Spouses, organised by the general secretariat of Francophonie, within the margins of the 13th Francophonie summit did not only permit Mrs Biya, who is UNESCO’s Goodwill Ambassador for Education and Social inclusion to discover some of the site listed on the prestigious list of UNESCO but also to find out how wine is being produced.

Immediately after the opening ceremony of the 13th Francophonie summit, the First Spouses walked about 300 metres along the Geneva Lake from the Montreux Congress Hall to board a boat for their tour. Conviviality reigned amongst the First Ladies as they set out for their cruise with other members of the organising committee of the summit. Through informal discussions the women chatted amongst themselves as they toured the Lake Geneva Region. During the trip, they passed through the town of Vevey, discovered the vineyards of Lavaux with its exceptional beauty. The vineyard which was shaped by human hands since the Middle Ages, reflects in the sparkling waters of Lake Geneva while facing the majestic mountain scenery. The Lavaux vineyard was sculpted and shaped by generations of winemakers. It is supported by walls of brown stone with the contours of the terraces, separated by hundreds of trails and stairways.

After making a stop at Vevey, where the Ladies enjoyed lunch from a surface that permitted them to have a good view of the Lake and Mountain, they later embarked this time in a bus to trace the origin of wine at the “Domaine des Faverges” at Chexbre which is also part of the UNESCO’s World Heritage of Humanity at the Lavaux Region. Here, it was interesting for the First Spouses to go through the process of winemaking from planting, disbudding and stripping, care in the vineyard, harvesting and bottling. First Ladies learned that the quality of wine begins in the vineyard with the choice of grape variety from the ground and the care given to it.

The wine makers revealed that the Swiss winemakers are the vanguard in the field of environmental protection and that during the alcoholic fermentation of wine, they sleep with one eye, watching over every barrel and every tank, enjoying daily monitoring evolution of the wine as a mother watches over her children.
