Industrial Development Under Scrutiny

Experts are meeting in Douala to size up challenges in industrial development and upgrade enterprises.

Experts in industrial development are meeting in Douala to validate Cameroon’s White Book. White Book is a collective of hindrances, setbacks and challenges facing the development of industries in Cameroon. The seminar, which ended Monday November 1, 2010 with a restoration and validation of the project: “Elaboration of White Book and an action plan for reinforcement of the capacity of Cameroon’s intermediary organisations, in view of re-launching industrial development”, started Sunday at the Chamber of Commerce with a series of workshops. This project, initiated by Cameroon Chamber of Commerce, CCC, is in line with the general framework for the creation of a business environment that favours the private sector. It also seeks to build the standards of enterprises, especially in a difficult economic context marked by a strong international competition. This is to help Cameroon attain its objective of becoming an emerging economy by 2035.

In June this year, a team of international and local experts studied 300 enterprises, including the Chamber of Commerce. A reference exercise was conducted in Tunisia, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire – a yardstick for the drawing up of a plan of action for Cameroon. Some FCFA 520 millions was put in place to constitute a group of professionals and to reinforce certain intermediary organisations to execute the plan. Christophe Eken, CCC President, presided over the opening ceremony attended by Francoise Foning, President of CCC Industrial Section, and Raul Mateus-Paul, Ambassador and European Union Delegate in Cameroon, beside donors and the 60 public and private sector participants.
