Partnership to Improve Healthcare in Cameroon

The Minister of Public Health, André Mama Fouda and the Health Delegate for the Littoral Region, André Bita Fouda on thursday in Yaounde signed the Subsidiary Funding Accord aimed at improving healthcare services in the Littoral Region. It is a subsidiary to the main funding accord signed between the Ministry of Public Health and the World Bank in 2009 to carry out Results-Based Funding in the Cameroon Health System. The Special Subsidiary Fund begins with the four health districts in the Littoral Region located at Loum, Yabassi, Edea and Cité des Palmiers.

The World Bank Lead Public Health Specialist for Human Development 3, for the Africa Region, Benjamin P. Loevinsohn said the project is a complement to the existing World Bank projects in the country to support investment in the health sector called “PIAISS” in French. The Results-Based Funding which begins in the Littoral Region through the Littoral Special Fund will serve as the intermediary charged with interpreting performance from health districts using funds from the World Bank. According to the Minister of Public Health, André Mama Fouda, the reform will go a long way to intensify the fight against HIV, reinforce health services in the country, fight against infant and maternal mortality as well ameliorate health goals in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In future, the special subsidiary fund will be extended to South-West, North-West and East Regions of the country.
