Startling Figures on Cholera Epidemic

Close to 10,000 cases have been reported, with 597 deaths in the country as at November 8 2010.

The situation of the current cholera epidemic continues to raise fears in the country. The recent outbreak is one of the most severe in decades. Over the past two days, new cases have been reported in the Far North Region. According to reports from the Department of Disease Control in the Ministry of Public Health, a total of 9,395 cases of cholera have been registered all over the country with 597 deaths, giving an average death rate of 6.35 percent. The Far North Region has registered a total of 8,830 cases with 573 deaths. The North Region comes next with 328 cases and 17 deaths. Of late, 34 new cases have been registered in the region and all of them in the Figuil Health District. The Littoral Region has registered 204 cases with five deaths. Two new cases have been registered within four days in the region and no new deaths reported. Meanwhile, in the Centre Region, 31 cases in all, with four deaths were reported. Two new cases have been announced in the Nkolndongo Health District in Yaounde. In all, six regions, notably the Far North, North, Littoral, Centre, West and Adamaoua are affected and 58 health districts out of the 179 in the country have been hit by the cholera epidemic. In the Far North Region, all the 28 health districts are affected. The Moulvoudaye Health District which was not hit by the epidemic has now been affected as well. Statistics on the number of cases and deaths according to heath districts show that the Far North Region has 67 new cases with two deaths in five days. The Mayo Danay, Logone and Chari and the Mayo Kani divisions accounted for a majority of the cases. The Health Districts most hit are Maga with 15, Mada 16, Moulvoudaye 9 and Vélé 7 respectively. In the Littoral Region, 10 new cases have been registered within days from the Deido, New Bell and Nylon health districts. But no new deaths have been registered. In the Centre Region, 12 health districts have been affected since November 8, 2010. Out of the 31 cumulated cases, one is from Mbandjock Health District and the remaining two from Djoungolo Health District. However, controlling the disease remains stable in the Littoral, Centre, West and Adamaoua regions. Cases continue to be reported in health districts of the Far North and North regions.
