Urban Dev’t Minister Wants Bamenda Given Facelift

Flags, buntings, monuments, mobile toilets and road traffic signs were recommended by the Minister during his recent visit.

Render Bamenda more beautiful with road traffic signs on major roads that lead to Bamenda Airport at Bafut and the Grandstand at the Commercial Avenue were the instructions of the Urban Development and Housing Minister, Clobert Tchatat during his November 19 visit to the North West Regional headquarters, Bamenda as part of preparations for the forthcoming visit of the Head of State to the city for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Armed Forces scheduled for November 29th and 30th.

The brief outing in Bamenda was eventful with Minister Clobert Tchatat instructing contractors to clear obstacles on the 6-km long, second access way into Bamenda from Up Station to prepare it for use during the event. Contractors also have to make available water tankers to water dusty roads from the new access way or bypass from GRA Up Station through the Cattle Market, PMI Nkwen, Below Foncha, Ngongham and the City Council. Concerned contractors are also expected to turn full circle to give secondary roads the best look to ensure free movement when the major ones become congested.

It was against this backdrop that Minister Clobert Tchatat visited the new billboard at Mile II, Up Station welcoming guests to metropolitan Bamenda. He was also at the new access way, Foncha and Ndamukong streets, beautification projects and the airport. The Regional Delegate of Urban Development and Housing, Asongwed Emmanuel Anyang also took the Minister round some rehabilitated bad spots on the highway by Ayaba Hotel, the Mankon Bridge and the Refuse Dump that has been moved to faraway Mankon village.

It was during a working session to end the visit that the Government Delegate to the Bamenda City Council, Ndumu Nji Vincent revealed mobilization efforts to ensure that the city shines with national colours on trees and pools, banners with messages, whitewashed road sides, effigies of the Head of State, buntings planted along the road to be used by the Head of State and some 12 mobile toilets for those who will come out to cheer President Paul Biya. Red and white paintings on road sides and road markings will be painted to ease traffic and pedestrian movements. All this, the Minister said, should give Bamenda a befitting facelift in readiness for the presidential visit.
