The two-day workshop was informed by the release of the country’s Strategy Paper on Growth and Employment that recognizes the need for more electricity power generation, accompanied by measures to protect the environment. The document recognizes the role of adequate power generation in the growth of the economy. The two-day workshop, organised by the Ministry of Water and Energy, was attended by 100 participants and opened by the ministry’s Secretary General, Fritz Gerald Nassako.
The objective of the seminar was to involve the civil society in issues of energy generation and environmental protection. The participants exchanged ideas and established contacts for further discussions on improving the capacity of civil society to effectively contribute to decision-making and the monitoring of the energy projects.
Participants reviewed principles that govern environmental protection in power generation. They also examined current arrangements to be considered in the community by structures involved in the construction and operation of energy infrastructure and raising awareness of community people in their involvement in the successful implementation power generation projects.
Closing the ceremony, Fritz Gerald Nassako said the workshop offered the opportunity to reinforce collaboration and dialogue between the different participants in the field of environmental protection as concerns energy. “As part of its economic and social development, Cameroon plans to meet its ambitious long-term development of energy infrastructure to meet power demand and sustain economic growth and job creation. The question is whether the public shares the concerns of the state and partners on environmental protection,” said Fritz Gerald Nassako.
