USA To Support Voters Registration in Cameroon

Ambassador Robert P. Jackson made the declaration November 29 after meeting the Speaker of Cameroon’s National Assembly.

The government of the United States of America is “looking into how we can support the voter registration programme in Cameroon as elections are a year away”, the US Ambassador to Cameroon, Robert P. Jackson told journalists in Yaounde yesterday, November 29 after paying a maiden courtesy visit to the Speaker of Cameroon’s National Assembly, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril.

Robert Jackson who was sworn-in as the US Ambassador to Cameroon on September 17, 2010, disclosed in an interview that his discussions with Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril focused on relations between Cameroon’s National Assembly and the US Congress. “We hope that the cooperation can be renewed because it has become a little stale over the last few years”, Ambassador Robert Jackson said. The audience at the House Speaker’s cabinet coincided with the ongoing November 2010 ordinary session of Parliament. This obviously influenced the topics of discussion as the US Ambassador revealed that they talked about the budgetary session and other legislation the government was looking into to foster the country’s development.

The US government, Robert Jackson said, was greatly supporting the Health Ministry and other health services in Cameroon, especially with the presence of diseases such as cholera and HIV/AIDS. He said the support is going up to 14 million US Dollars (close to FCFA 7 billion) this year. In the medium term, the Ambassador said, the US government will want to see how to work together with Cameroon on security issues. “I want to very much find ways through which we can reinforce our partnership”, he concluded.
