Master-Stroke

“It is with great pleasure for me to be back in Bamenda. Your region is my second home.” With this declaration at the Bamenda commercial Avenue, grand stand, Wednesday, 10 December 2010, President Paul Biya unveiled a “monument” of pleasant surprises that were going to continue until Friday, 10 December when he granted audience to Ni John Fru Ndi, national chairman of Cameroon’s leading opposition party, the Social Democratic Front, SDF.

The joy of seeing these two Cameroonian personalities come together, shake hands, smile with each other, sit down and talk the affairs of their country, was such that the rest of the country joined their compatriots of the Northwest region to rejoice over the significant gesture of the President’s proof and demonstration that, he had not only been listening to the people’s demands, but also taking note of their political and crucial developmental needs.

In this light, it was therefore no surprise to many that after announcing the creation of a state university in Bamenda, the President went on to disclose that studies were already being undertaken to open a referral hospital in his second home and to construct a hydro-electricity dam on the Mentchum Falls, besides a giant thermal electricity plant in the regional capital.

By making known to his compatriots his plan to provide the North West Region these infrastructure generally known to be indispensable to development, the Cameroon Head of State in effect, proved to the rest of Cameroon and the International Community that as a leader with a craving for peace, political stability, and progress, he is committed to what sustains these values.

Furthermore, as a leader of all Cameroonians, no matter, their origin, creed and political leanings, President Paul Biya made it clear to his compatriots that he has in mind all the administrative units of the country, and would spare no efforts attend to their needs.

It is this concern for the future of this beloved country of ours that the President after meeting with opposition leader, John Fru Ndi could not hesitate to invite him to the Ebolowa Agro-Pastoral show. And what a feat of political maturity for Mr. Fru Ndi to declare to journalists, that his meeting with President Biya, was the beginning of dialogue which would continue in the interest of fellow Cameroonians!

These striking political events which took place at the golden jubilee of our military corps whose commitment to the defense of our national territory and service to the nation and other socio-economic domains portray, not only our political maturity, but also commitment to peace, solidarity and progress.

This element of political maturity and patriotic wisdom is essential to sustenance of peace and cooperation at national, regional and international levels. We are indeed happy that our political leaders are conscious of their roles, and are alive to their obligations.

Cameroon whose people are well known for their enviable intelligence cannot afford to neglect issues that betray our patriotism and political maturity. Hence, what a blessing that great things are indeed happening!

To forge ahead Cameroonians, ought to appreciate in positive action and effective contribution to development of the pleasant surprises that have emanated from the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Cameroon Armed Force, this year in Bamenda. For, it was indeed a master-stroke with pleasant surprises whose effects will yield dividends.

As we expect more pleasant surprises during this month, when we commemorate, the coming of the Prince of Peace, let us all aim at making and keeping the peace which we need for development and consolidation of cooperation with other nations.
