Doubting Thomas’s can now start thinking differently about the announcement made on Wednesday December 8, 2010 in Bamenda by the Head of State on the creation the University of Bamenda. Respecting the announcement he made during his official visit to the North West Region for commemorative activities marking the 50th anniversary of the Defence Forces in Cameroon, President Paul Biya signed two decrees yesterday December 14, 2010: one creating the University of Bamenda and the second raising the Teachers Training College, ENS Annex Bambili to two separate Schools attached to the University of Bamenda that will be located in Bambili.
Consequently, the new University of Bamenda will immediately have the Higher Teachers’ Training College and the Higher Technical Teachers’ Training College as schools attached to it. The two schools are an offshoot of the former ENS Annex Bambili that has been raised to distinct schools. While the Higher Teachers’ Training College in Bambili will function with 11 departments, the Higher Technical Teachers’ Training College will have seven departments.
The new university according to the Presidential decree is being given a strong technological orientation with the creation of the Department of Administrative Technics, the Department of Economics Sciences, the Department of Civil Engineering and Forestry Technics, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Computer Sciences, the Department of Home Economics and Family Management as well as the Department of Electrical and Power Engineering.
Understandably, when President Paul Biya took advantage of his official visit to the North West Regional capital, Bamenda from December 8-10 to announce the creation of the University of Bamenda, the news created unprecedented euphoria among the entire population of the region. However, some thought the take off of the new university could be differed to the next academic year. But no. The Head of State as per yesterday’s decrees has demonstrated that the information was well grounded on solid studies that had a well defined content and fields of interests that clearly show the options of the University.
