Following the signing on Tuesday December 14, 2010 of a decree by the Head of State creating the University of Bamenda and another stipulating the various departments of the university, the Minister of Higher Education, Jacques Fame Ndongo immediately issued a decision that renders the new university functional. The minister’s move (see entire text in the column) is to create conditions that permit the university to start operating pending the appointment, by the Head of State, of those who will run it affairs.
By designating those who will handle the day-to-day matters of the Advanced Teachers Training College and the Advanced Technical Teachers Training College Bamenda in Bambili, the Minister is out to ensure that since there already exists basic infrastructure that can enable the Head of State’s promise to be made concrete, there is no need waiting any longer. Thus, once President Paul Biya appoints those who will manage the university, they will not have to begin from a virgin ground. Their task will mostly be to complete the expansion of the university by indicating further avenues of growth. In an interview with Cameroon Tribune, the Minister of Higher Education explains government’s plans on rendering the University of Bamenda fully operational.
