The First Lady on tuesday December 21 at the Unity Palace received the Vice President of the eye care charity, ‘Ophtalmo Sans Frontiers.’
The Vice President of the eye care charity, ‘Ophtalmo Sans Frontières,’ Dr Jeanne Bonnefous, was visibly impressed yesterday evening as she stepped out of the Oriental Pavilion of the Unity Palace. Dr Jeanne Bonnefous was just from an audience with First Lady, Chantal Biya. She told pressmen of her satisfaction with the interest Mrs Biya showed in caring for those with eye problems. “I was very touched with Mrs Biya’s interest”, Dr Jeanne Bonnefous said.
According to Dr Bonnefous, their discussions focused on the second phase of a recent eye treatment campaign conducted by the Non-governmental Organization in Meyomessala, in the South Region of Cameroon, in partnership with the Chantal Biya Foundation. She noted that the Meyomessala mission was satisfactory as the people were happy to receive free eye care (including surgery) and drugs. During the campaign, some 250 people from the area received proper eye care from ‘Ophtalmo Sans Frontières’ at the Medical Centre of the Chantal Biya Foundation in Meyomessala.
The five-day eye campaign was essentially about screening eyes for disorders so as to reduce morbidity associated with ophthalmologic diseases in the Meyomessala area. Patients attended to during the campaign benefited from eye consultations, medication and glasses. While prevention remains the cornerstone of disease prevention, proper care by patients is essential in disease eradication, Dr Bonnefous noted.
Yesterday’s audience was thus a forum for Dr Jeanne Bonnefous and Mrs Chantal Biya to discuss a long partnership between the Chantal Biya Foundation and ‘Ophtalmo Sans Frontières’ in a bid to better care for those suffering from eye disorders such as allergy, cataract and refractive error.
