La cérémonie de l’arbre de Noël s’est déroulée hier sous la présidence de la première dame.

C’est finalement autour de 14h45 que Chantal Biya quitte la Fondation. Elle retrouve à l’extérieur de l’enceinte une ambiance tout aussi surchauffée qu’à l’intérieur. La première dame fera donc comme souvent, ces dernières années. Une centaine de mètres à pied, pour répondre aux marques d’attachement manifestées par les groupes de danse et surtout des centaines de curieux ayant investi l’itinéraire du cortège. Avant de prendre place à bord de son véhicule, Mme Biya s’offre un de ces bains de foule qu’elle affectionne. Dans la foule, beaucoup ont l’occasion de lui serrer la main. Et elle, s’en donne à cœur-joie, sans se départir de ce sourire.

Ainsi s’achève l’édition 2010 de la cérémonie de l’arbre de Noël à la Fondation Chantal Biya. Avec comme actrice principale, la première dame, Chantal Biya, qui entame ce véritable périple dès son arrivée à la Fondation qui porte son nom. Un premier groupe d’enfants, 300 de source officielle, passe devant le Père Noël. La première dame distribue paquet sur paquet, à une file interminable d’enfants des écoles publiques de la ville de Yaoundé. Mais pas de souci, tout le monde est bientôt servi. Deux autres groupes de 150 enfants chacun, installés de part et d’autre de l’enceinte de la Fondation, ont le même privilège au cours de la cérémonie. L’épouse du chef de l’Etat donne et redonne. Et les enfants descendent de l’estrade, visiblement émus. Ils serrent leurs paquets bien contre eux, comme si un esprit malveillant allait tenter de les leur arracher.

Entre ces moments de distribution ponctués par des chansons en son honneur, Chantal Biya, inaugure et visite la nouvelle unité pédiatrique de jour. Puis, sacrifie aux étapes classiques de ce rendez-vous annuel très couru. Avec d’autres paquets pour les enfants malades, elle fait le tour des salles d’hospitalisation dans les différents pavillons du Centre mère et enfant. Même exercice au Children First Center, où les enfants en détresse lui chantent une jolie petite chanson. Eux aussi ont droit à leur cadeau de Noël.

Autre étape traditionnelle, le dépôt d’une gerbe de fleurs devant le buste sculpté de Jeanne Irène Biya. C’est un moment de recueillement pour la première dame qui s’incline. Et souvent, tout juste après, le Pr. Gervais Mendo Ze et la Voix du Cénacle entrent en scène. C’est encore le cas ce jeudi. La chorale exécute une ode à l’œuvre sociale multiforme de la première dame camerounaise. Chantal Biya marque un temps d’arrêt pour écouter et applaudir l’œuvre exécutée dans un style très caractéristique. Elle est entourée de personnalités d’horizons divers. On reconnaît entre autres, le ministre de la Santé publique, André Mama Fouda et le Secrétaire général de la FCB, Habissou Bidoung Mpkatt, qui l’accompagnent dans cette « tournée ».

Près de quatre heures d’horloge après son arrivée, Chantal Biya a fait de nouveaux heureux en cette veille Noël. Il faut les voir étrenner leurs paquets pour comprendre.

«Mother Christmas» Arrives With Abundant Gifts

The First Lady yesterday treated pupils and patients at her Foundation to a Christmas feast with plenty of gifts.

First Lady, Chantal Biya, had a blissful Christmas feast yesterday December 23, at her Foundation (Chantal Biya Foundation) with sick children and school pupils who had come to share the joy in celebrating Christmas. It was an exceptional moment of happiness in the midst of pain and ill health. The First Lady’s presence at her foundation was like a star which had come to brighten the faces and minds of sick children with Christmas gifts and friendly hugs of solidarity and hope. At each point, her enticing smile brought hope to the patients and also revealed the slogan of the Foundation which is; smile, hope and solidarity. For over four hours, an untiring Chantal Biya was seen handing gifts from one section of her foundation to the other.

The 2010 Christmas fiesta at the Chantal Biya Foundation was well designed to make it special as always. The First Lady, as usual, came with a huge bag of gifts not only for sick people in her Foundation, but also for over 600 pupils drawn from various primary schools in Yaounde. Her arrival at the Foundation, in elegant pink attire that corresponds with the colours of the Foundation premises added furnishing to the decoration already put in place. Acclaimed with applause from an enthusiastic crowd of invitees and passers-by, Chantal Biya immediately proceeded with the distribution of gifts to school pupils who had lined up at the main entrance of the foundation. The children could not hide their joy in receiving Christmas gifts from the First Lady as they immediately sang a song of best wishes which they learned and kept rehearsing some few minutes before her arrival. Invited guests and wives of the President’s close collaborators accompanied the First Lady in the noble exercise of gifts distribution.

The First Lady later placed Christmas gifts on the sick beds of all children in the foundation, starting with the sick at the Mother and Child Centre of the Foundation to the orphans at the Children First Centre. While moving around the Foundation, heaps of gifts could be seen at strategic corners. The ever cheerful First Lady stopped at each point to distribute the gifts. Even those that came for daily consultation or just passing around the Foundation received a Christmas gift from the First Lady. Over 10 choral and traditional dance groups displayed within the Foundation adding sound to a ceremony that brought hope and joy to sick children and their families.

This year, the foundation received a special Christmas gift from the First Lady; a Mother and Child Paediatrics Unit Center built with the support of Total Foundation. Mrs Chantal Biya used the Christmas feast occasion to inaugurate the unit which will contribute in reinforcing the role already played by the Foundation in caring for mothers and children.

The memory of late Jeanne Irene Biya was also remembered during the event as the First Lady placed a bouquet of flowers on the monument of Jeanne Irene Biya, in front of the Jeanne Irene Pavillion at the foundation. As Mrs Biya bid farewell to those at the Foundation, it was time for those who had lined up outside the Foundation to feel the friendliness of the First Lady. She walked about 100 metres shaking hands with those who had come either to animate the event or by curiosity to see what was happening at the Foundation.

L’unité pédiatrique du jour de la Fondation inaugurée par Chantal Biya.

Pour matérialiser le souci de la première dame de s’impliquer davantage dans l’allègement des soucis des enfants et des mères vivant avec le VIH/Sida, une nouvelle unité a vu le jour à la Fondation Chantal Biya (FCB) : l’unité pédiatrique du jour. Construit sur le site de l’ancien service des urgences de la FCB, le bâtiment de 600 m2 a été inauguré hier par Chantal Biya, venue à l’occasion de la cérémonie de l’arbre de Noël. C’est le fruit d’un partenariat avec la Fondation Total et l’Institut Pasteur de Paris, via le projet ANRS Pediacam.

Cette unité a pour objectif d’améliorer la prise en charge des enfants atteints du VIH/Sida, mais également de leurs mamans. Ceci grâce à un soutien nutritionnel, psychosocial, thérapeutique (vaccins, médicaments, etc.), biologique et socio-économique. L’unité pédiatrique du jour a également pour mission la prévention de la transmission du VIH de la mère à l’enfant (PTME). Le bâtiment ainsi construit et que la première dame a visité hier vient renforcer des activités en cours depuis 2007. En effet, selon le Pr. Koki Ndombo, directeur du Centre mère et enfant de la FCB, quelque 670 couples mères-enfants sont enregistrés dans cette unité et placés sous antirétroviraux. Sans oublier les 4000 familles bénéficiant de la PTME.

La cérémonie d’hier a permis à la première dame de visiter les salles de consultation et de councelling, où le personnel médical était déjà en activité avec des patients, la salle de conférences, la pharmacie, etc. D’après Pierre Bang, directeur général de Total EP Cameroun, parlant au nom de la Fondation Total, ce partenariat est le résultat du plaidoyer du Pr. Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, prix Nobel de médecine 2008, qui a visité la FCB. Après des accords signés en 2008, tout a été mis en branle et en 6 mois, le bâtiment est sorti de terre. D’où l’odeur de peinture ambiante. Par ailleurs, le budget de départ a été quasiment triplé, offrant un bâtiment à deux niveaux. Mais déjà, alors que le projet de trois ans court encore, à hauteur de 585 millions de F, 200 autres millions ont été accordés afin qu’un niveau, à livrer en 2011, soit ajouté au bâtiment inauguré hier. Il sera destiné à l’hémato-oncologie. La première dame, visiblement touchée par ce geste de cœur, n’a pu lancer qu’un « grand merci », au terme de la présentation.

600 Pupils Receive Gifts From First Lady

It was an unusual atmosphere at the Chantal Biya Foundation yesterday, December 23 as First Lady, Chantal Biya personally handed over gifts to 600 pupils. The pupils from some schools in Yaounde who benefited from the First Lady’s humanitarian gesture smiled from jaw to jaw as Mrs Chantal Biya made her way to the stand where the first set of gifts were to be handed. Their joy went wild when the First Lady, all smiles handed over gifts to each of them. As she distributed the beautifully packaged gifts, the kids became more and more jolly. After handing the Christmas gifts to the first set of 300 primary school children, the First Lady proceeded with the sharing of Christmas sweets from the nearby Christmas tree. Even those out of the gate had a share of the First Lady’s gestures as she threw some of the sweets across the gate where some onlookers and admirers. Mrs Chantal Biya ended by immortalising the event with the hundreds of exciting pupils in snap shots. Her second stop was at another end of the foundation where 150 pupils were ready to benefit from her kind gestures. The same ritual was performed and the First Lady ended with another family picture. The third and last exercise to the remaining 150 witnessed the same emotions.

Before her arrival at the esplanade of the foundation where all had been set a hilarious welcome, pupils; beneficiaries of her goodwill gestures all chanted and sang for her. Through song and dance and brandishing of fliers hailing First Lady, the pupils, expressed immense joy and gratitude as they welcomed Mrs Chantal Biya in their midst. They confessed through song and dance that they had nothing to offer the First Lady but their prayers for long life and good health.

The 600 pupils drawn from schools like the Central Government English Primary School, “Ecole Public de Messa, Camp Bove etc, in the Yaounde I, II, III and VI municipalities told First Lady that they were grateful to be honoured by her. Emotions were high as well as the anxiety to discover the great things that were in their parcels. Being her first time to set eyes on the First Lady, nine year-old Justina Bongben, a class six pupil of the Central Government English Primary School could not hide her joy. “I am so grateful and happy to have been fortunate to receive my Christmas gift from the First Lady. The joy cannot be expressed and the anxiety to discover what is inside is so high,” she said full of smiles. “I made my mine to open my parcel only at home,” she added. Like Justina, Elise Stephanie Essama Essola of the same class and school told CT that with the gratitude in her, all she can offer Mrs Chantal Biya is a very happy New Year 2011.
