Suspected Car Thieves Nabbed in Douala

The four carjackers were picked up after a gun and knife battle between the police and the underworld in Bonanjo on January 5 breaking 6. Police of the Mobile Intervention Unit, MIU, No. 2 of Bonanjo has relieved the public of an alleged gang of wanton criminals specialised in stealing cars. The four suspected armed robbers, who mainly used rudimentary weapons and patronized the Texaco-Airport road, confined themselves in two groups: one beside ASECNA Bonanjo (the point where most acts of robbery were hitherto perpetrated) and the other in dark corners a little far away from ASECNA as a strategy to fight back. The arrests of the alleged armed robbers in the night of January 5 breaking 6 followed an attack on two police officers (dressed in civilian) in attempt to make away with their car.

Complaints from Bonanjo denizens, victims and some users of road prompted the security officers to launch a special operation, the strategy being to send two police officers dressed in civilian in a private car to divert suspicion from the underworld. The police strategy paid off as the police officers were assailed and attempts made at seizing the car met with a violent retaliation from the security men who received ample support from three other police officers who followed closely from behind.

In the ensuing raid the armed robbers injured one police officer with a sword, but the security men concretize their strategy, shot Oumarou Sohodi on the left leg and arrested him. As the violent battle between the men of the underworld and the police went on, two armed robbers who lodged in nearby dark corner a little far from the road rode in on a motorbike and reinforce the attack against the police. Unfortunately the police concretize their strategies and apprehended the two bandits. Oumarou Sohodi helped the police to arrest Essiakou in his room in the Village neighborhood. Police sources say Essiakou, who was picked up at about 3 a.m., had been bleeding profusely from a bullet wounds sustained during the armed battle at Bonanjo that night. His landlady testified overhearing a motorbike dropping Essiakou at about 2 a.m. and taking off immediately. One of the bandits is said to be on the run. The apprehended armed bandits, who used mostly swords, knives and machetes, are presently in custody at the Judicial Police Headquarters in Bonanjo.
