ELECAM Prepares To Organise Credible Elections

The elections managing institution is bracing up to organise the 2011 presidential election. Cameroon’s elections managing institution, Elections Cameroon (ELECAM), will concentrate all efforts to ensure the proper organisation and conduct of the 2011 presidential, that will be the its first test since creation by the law of December 29, 2006.

The Director General of Elections at ELECAM, Mohaman Sani Tanimou while receiving 2011 New Year wishes from the staff of the institution’s head office, Regional Delegates and Chiefs of Services, as well as local officials from the Centre Region, last January 13, stated the plan of action for the year. The Deputy Director General of Elections, Erik Essousse joined Mr Mohaman Sani to receive and wish the staff a happy and prosperous 2011.

Mohaman Sani Tanimou said the urgent task of ELECAM will be to intensify the registration of voters, especially women and disabled people, finalise the computerisation of the electoral register, conceive, produce and distribute electoral documents. Other key actions of the ELECAM, he further said, will consist of commanding, receiving and distributing electoral material, create and organise polling stations, as well as organise and manage voting.

Mohaman Sani Tanimou said that by December 25, 2010, ELECAM had registered over 700,000 voters in the exercise launched last August15. He enumerated actions taken to implant ELECAM in all the 360 Council areas in Cameroon, make all the field structures operational and prepare for transparent, free, fair, credible and accepted 2011 presidential election. The Director General of Elections also presented a list of managerial actions undertaken and those envisaged to enable the staff attain the set objectives.
