Cameroon, Nigeria Envisage Joint Military Patrols

Prime Minister Philemon Yang on February 18 received a Nigerian delegation led by Foreign Affairs Minister, Henry Odein Ajumogobia. Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Henry Odein Ajumogobia last February 18 in Cameroon’s capital, Yaounde,  said  Cameroon and Nigeria were looking forward to establishing joint military patrols, especially at maritime borders, to check the constant attacks by pirates and gunmen in the Gulf of Guinea. The joint efforts by the military of the two countries will check insecurity in Bakassi in Cameroon and the Delta region in Nigeria, all found in the Gulf of Guinea and enable Cameroon and Nigeria concentrate on economic development which is a major challenge to both countries, Minister Odein Ajumogobia said. The Nigerian Foreign Minister led a delegation to the Prime Minister’s Office where they had discussions with the Head of Government,  Philemon Yang, who received them on behalf of President Paul Biya. Some key members of the Nigerian delegation included the Governor of Adamawa State, Rtd Admiral Murtala Nyako, the Minister of Power, Nuhu Wya and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Cameroon, Philip Ali Dauda.

Foreign Minister Henry Odein Ajumogobia  used the audience to hand a sealed message from  the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan to  Prime Minister Yang for onward transmission to President Paul Biya of Cameroon. The Nigerian delegation was at the Star Building to brief  Mr Yang on the two framework agreements they signed earlier Friday in Cameroon’s Ministry of External Relations.  The Minister of External Relations, Henri Eyebe Ayissi signed the agreements on behalf of the government of Cameroon and Heny Odein Ajumogobia signed for the Nigerian government.

The first was the framework agreement on electricity interconnection focused at laying down the institutional framework for the planning, coordination, financing and realisation of electricity interconnection between Cameroon and Nigeria. The second was the framework agreement in matters of sports and physical education. The agreement aims at strengthening collaboration and bilateral exchange through the development of research and excellence in matters of sports and physical education between the two countries on the basis of reciprocity and mutual benefit. The two agreements were initiated during the last Cameroon-Nigeria Joint Commission session in November 2010.

Talking to journalists after the audience, Nigeria’s Foreign Minister reiterated the commitment of his government to ensure that the two countries improve and broaden relations in the socio-economic and other sectors.
