Cameroon-Equatorial Guinea: Efforts Intensify to Tackle Trans-border, Consular Problems

Prime Minister Philemon Yang yesterday had discussions with Equatorial Guinea’s Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Francophonie. The Minister Delegate at the Equatorial Guinea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Francophonie, Eustaquio Nseng Esono yesterday, February 22 in Yaounde said, there were no major problems at the borders between Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, explaining that there is trade between the populations of the two countries across the borders.

Speaking to the press after discussions with Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Philemon Yang, Eustaquio Nseng Esono said the key problem at the border was clandestine and illegal migration that does not only concern Cameroonians as people move across the borders of the two countries.

The Equatorial Guinea’s Minister and his delegation came to brief the Prime Minister on the level of work at the two-day  session of the Cameroon-Equatorial Guinea Ad hoc Commission on Consular and Trans-border issues.  The second session of the Ad hoc Commission kicked off at Cameroon’s Ministry of External Relations on Monday and ended yesterday, Tuesday, February 22. Members of the two delegations, Eustaquio Nseng Esono disclosed, were working to tackle problems related to visas, resident permits, diplomatic and service passports. At the trans-border level, he said, the Commission members were reflecting on putting in place a working group that will tackle problems at the local level without waiting for the intervention of higher authorities. He stated that the Yaounde session of the Commission was to end with the adoption of documents on agreements on consular and trans-border issues expected to be signed when the Cameroon-Equatorial Guinea Mixed Commission meets and decisions implemented.

Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Eustaquio Nseng Esono said, encouraged the Ad hoc Commission members and expressed the country’s political will for strengthened cooperation. He also said the President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo wants improved relations with Cameroon. “We are brotherly and neighbouring countries that must work together to improve relations, strengthen cooperation and work for the welfare of our populations”, Equatorial Guinea’s government minister concluded.

Equatorial Guinea’s Ambassador to Cameroon, Pedro Ela Nguema accompanied his country delegation to the Star Building for the audience.
