MTN Elite One: Championship Resumes This Weekend

The elite championship which has been in recess because of the African Nations Championship, resumes this weekend with two late Day 11 matches scheduled to take place. With the premature ousting of Cameroon from the competition, players from Astres, Coton Sports, and Union who constituted the bulk of the players that were called for the amateur national football team, are now free to resume activity with their various clubs. It is as such that Coton Sport will be playing host to Yong Sports Academy from Bamenda, whereas Union takes on their fellow brothers of the economic capital, Astres, next Sunday in a fratricidal derby at the Reunification stadium in Douala that is going to be the focus of the late Day 11 encounters.

Union Douala currently occupies the 17th position on the classification chart with 17 points whereas Astres alias the Brazilians from Bepanda occupy the 6th position with 15 points. Though not reminiscent of the classical derbies of the yesteryears between Canon and Tonnerre or Union-Caiman, encounters between Union and Astres have proved to be crowd pullers in the past. The encounter is going to be fireworks given that a victory for either team will enable the team move up of the classification table.

Meanwhile, league leaders, Coton Sport will be seeking to consolidate their position at the helm of the classification table when they take on 9th-placed Yong Sport Academy on Saturday in Garoua. In an earlier Day 11 encounter, Tiko took advantage to beat AS Lausanne to leap out from the relegation zone, moving from the 13th to the 11th position just above the relegation line thereby plunging Sable in the red zone.
