Fifty-year old people and North West personalities who played frontline roles in Cameroon’s reunification process from 1961-1972 are in the limelight as the nation mobilizes to celebrate the 50th anniversary of reunification this year. In effect, anniversary activities are already underway in the region following the launch in Nkambe, Donga Mantung Division on Tuesday March 1 by Governor Abakar Ahamat. At the event, the Governor called on the people of the region to preserve and not destroy dividends of the 50-year old reunification.
He is currently touring all divisional headquarters with messages that mobilize and inspire inhabitants to stand by collective efforts towards hitch-free celebrations. It is all about reflections and sweet memories of the past that challenge Cameroonians to forge ahead in peace and unity. On each lap of the tour, the Governor is expected to attend public lectures and discussions that inspire hope. The Nkambe lap included Kucha George, Ndzi Martin Ngalla and Ngeh Jerome presenting lectures on state institutions and symbols, and how to enhance responsible citizenship.
By the time the region-wide tour ends on May 17, the people are expected to share testimonies and pay tribute to personalities who have contributed to the country’s reunification, peace and harmony since 1961. Amongst the scheduled lectures are “North West cultural heritage that shaped national heritage for 50 years,” “Contribution of communities of settlers to North West identity,” “Contribution of internal and external Diaspora in affirming the North West as an integral part of Cameroon,” as well as trying to answer questions as to if the North West was a problem or solution to reunification.
