UK Mission and Nyong and So’o MP Honours Rural Women

The British High Commission to Cameroon has partnered with the MP for the Nyong and So’o – the Honourable Bleue Régine Tsoungui Obama to donate farm tools worth FCFA 900,000 to female farmers of Ngomedzap, near Mbalmayo, to mark the International Women’s day on 8 March 2011.

Speaking ahead of the occasion, British high Commissioner to Cameroon Bharat Joshi said, “I am particularly pleased to work with the women of Nyong and So’o who have shown a great deal of dynamism reflected in the drive of their leaders including the Honourable Tsoungui Obama, to promote entrepreneurship in their communities. One of the UK’s key priorities for Cameroon is to promote human rights, especially the rights of women, and I think supporting their effort to feed the nation empowers them a great deal to make their voices heard. This is particularly appropriate this year which the Commonwealth has dedicated to the theme Women as Agents of Change,” he added.

Apart from its effort to support human rights in Cameroon, this year, the British High Commission will also work with government and civil society to help combat corruption, promote UK-Cameroon trade and investment, promote Central African regional integration and border security and promote youth entrepreneurship. The mission will also build on its outstanding work to promote the fight against climate change in Cameroon.
