University of Bamenda: Giant Projects To Take Off Soon

The Rector of the University of Yaounde I, Prof. Oumarou Bouba on May 19 signed a press release publishing the results of tenders for construction work to begin on the campus of the University of Bamenda, (Higher Teacher’s Training College, Bambili), created on December 14, 2010 by President Paul Biya through a decree. The release publishes the enterprises that have been retained to undertake construction work for the latest created State University.

According to the press release, a third lecture hall of 1,100 seats will be constructed and equipped. The construction, worth over FCFA 523.4 million is expected to last eight months. A 300-seat restaurant will also be constructed and equipped for the institution. The work, expected to last 12 months, will cost FCFA 542.4 million. Two University halls of residence with 140 beds each worth FCFA 1.3 billion will also be constructed and equipped within a period of eight months. A third residence of 156 beds will be constructed and equipped within a period of eight months. It is estimated at FCFA 609.4 million. A laboratory block estimated to cost FCFA 665.4 million will also see the light of day. Finally, the press release mentions the construction of a computer network expected to cost some FCFA 156.1 million to be carried within four months. In all, six projects have been earmarked for immediate execution.

The earmarked projects fall within the framework of the Support Programme for Professional and Technological Development, PRO-ACTP, of the Ministry of Higher Education. During the fifth steering committee meeting of PRO-ACTP on April 7, the chair, who is also, Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo, announced the second phase of the programme which involves the rehabilitation and construction of other State-owned institutions.

The objective of PRO-ACTP is to ameliorate and re-enforce professional and technological development to meet the needs of the country in the health, education and engineering domains. Financed to the tune of over FCFA 31 billion under the Multilateral Debt Reduction Relief Initiative, C2D, the project seeks to make higher education more professional.
