Solidarity Charge

As nations talk of globalization and the need to give it a positive image, there is much that robs them of solidarity which enables us to forge ahead.

Regrettably, narrow patriotism within these nations themselves, economic protectionism, retrograde tendencies, and geo-political apathy have been embraced to an extent that one is bound to wonder if the New Millennium Development Goals concern only nations and not regions, and the International Community. Yet, these nations are aware of the ingredients of solidarity and its demands.

While Cameroon can rightly pride itself of being the laboratory of African Unity, and Africa in miniature, it is in effect, a peace-maker and keeper of this virtue of life. Its geographical location at the hinge of Africa, facilitates the kind of continental migrations that with over 250 ethnic groups, Cameroon, which is also known for its open-door policy, has become the place to be, invest and progress.

The country’s rich and largely unexploited natural resources continue to attract people in search of jobs, cooperation, and trade. Great! But some African countries surprisingly find it difficult to embrace this virtue, despite their membership in socio-economic groupings that call for free movement, trade, and settlement of nationals of the associations. Considering Cameroon’s enviable endowments and commitment to peaceful coexistence, who can doubt the secret behind the country’s several blessings which include peace, rich soils and intelligence of indigenes?

Cameroon’s attribute of peace does not stem and end with the serenity of its reunification after almost half a century of political separation; it includes the country’s laudable approach to the solution of the Bakassi land and maritime dispute. Its citizens’ expulsion from neighbouring countries, notably Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon, have been frequent and disturbing. Yet, Cameroon has kept to the principle of influencing by action its policy of peace, good governance, and sane diplomatic ties. This cannot, and should not be mistaken for weakness. For; it pays to be prudent and politically mature.

Of the over 3,000 persons expelled from Gabon this June, 1,517 are reportedly from Cameroon, 362 from Nigeria, 269 from Mali and the rest from 9 other African countries. This is not the first time non-nationals have had such an unpleasant surprise. But while we appeal to those who travel out of their countries to abide by the laws of their host nations, we expect these hosts to keep to policies that ensure the dignity of man, even though he is an embodiment of contradictions.

For it is such relations and policies that make foreign residents in Cameroon appreciate, not only the sociable nature of indigenes, but also the considerate conditions for acquiring residence permits and other documents that legalize their sojourn in the country. The norms of globalization, we should note, demand this virtue, which should be practised by peace-loving countries in need of fruitful cooperation.

Besides, at a time when CEMAC countries of this Sub-region are talking efficient and effective cooperation, leaders and the led must keep to the principles that make life worth living, within their national territories, the sub region, and our global village at large.
