Douala II : 3,200 School Children Awarded Excellence Prizes

Each received didactic materials from the Douala II Sub-Divisional Council with the collaboration of the newspaper distribution company, Messapresse.

Among the 3,000 pupils and 200 students, were a thousand other pupils and students who were donated text books on the basis of their “extremely poor” family backgrounds. During the award ceremony at the Douala II Multipurpose Centre on Thursday, June 16, presided over by the SDO of Wouri, Bernard Okalia Bilai, Mayor Denise Fampou highlighted that the award of gifts to the outstanding school children falls in line with the objective to promote academic excellence and stimulate positive competition that will also rejuvenate the learning spirit among those who did not make it this year.

On the other hand laureates are by the award exhorted not to assume a sense of having arrived as in academics there is always another height to attain. Meritorious school children were selected based on their overall performance in the course of the just ended school year. Each of the laureates was offered text and exercise books, pens and other didactic materials. “Our vision is to encourage youth development, and we make it our primary concern, to enhance optimal school performance for the future. This approach will enable us, without doubt, to find strategies to support continued success for the pupils to remain at the top level of their academic knowledge....For education is a strategy for social and human progress. And I will not cease to exercise my commitment to advocate the principle behind every effort that relies on discipline and seriousness at work,” said Mayor Denise Fampou. Also in attendance at the fourth edition of “Promotion Le Bouc’h” ceremony, which culminated with the Council’s Academic Excellence Day, June 16, were the DO of Douala II Sub-Division, teachers, Messapresse officials, and quarter heads. In all 11,000 meritorious students and pupils and the less privileged have so far benefitted from the scheme since the institution by the Council of an Academic Excellence Day in 2008 in tandem with the enormous efforts by government to promote excellence in the education sector.
