PM Visits Centre to Resettle Displaced Traders

The centre being constructed by the Yaounde City Council will resettle young traders displaced from the Central and Mokolo Markets.

Prime Minister, Head of Government Philemon Yang, says the government is concerned with the future of young traders and other people who were displaced from the Central, Mokolo Markets and other parts of the capital city. Mr Yang was speaking at Etetak located between City Verte, Mvog-Betsi and Nkolbissoon neighbourhoods where the Yaounde City Council is building shops and other facilities to accommodate and resettle the displaced traders.

After the guided visit during which the Government Delegate to the Yaounde City Council, Gilbert Tsimi Evouna explained the ongoing project, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction. He described the centre called “La Place des Jeunes” as being wonderful and lauded the efforts of the City Council. The youths, he said, will build a wonderful future for the country. The Prime Minister’s guided visit was in the presence of the Minister of Urban Development and Housing, Clobert Tchatat, Minister of Youth Affairs, Adoum Garoua, Minister of Employment and Vocational Training, Zacharie Pérevet, the Governor of the Centre Region, Roger Moise Eyene Nlom, the Prime Minister’s close collaborators among other officials.

The Director of Technical Services at the Yaounde City Council, Ndzana Arnauld Philippe told Cameroon Tribune that the City Council was working with the young traders on modalities of sharing out the shops and the specialty for each sector of the centre. However, some of the sections that will make up the centre include a bakery, used clothing, livestock, cosmetics and electronics. The first shops, Mr Ndzana disclosed, will be occupied by mid October 2011 and the remaining ones will be ready for use by the end of the year.

The spokesperson for the displaced traders, Pierre Zambo said the centre covers eight hectares. He disclosed that it the over 2,000 envisaged shops would accommodate some 6,000 traders.
