Lions Brace Up for World Boxing Championship

There is no respite for boxing lions who just returned from the African Games in Maputo as they continued training immediately towards the upcoming AIBA Men’s World Championship to take place in the capital city of Baku in Azerbaijan. Over 685 boxers aged between 17 and 34 from 127 countries around the world will be taking part in the biennial event in 10 weight categories with hopes of claiming ultimate glory by becoming a world champion. The 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships will have a particular significance as the first major qualifying event for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Cameroon will be represented by five boxers including two gold medallists at the African games, Joseph Mulema and Thomas Essomba as well as Romaric Ngoula, Yepmou Blaise and Ismaila Mahamat who were semi finalists at the continental jamboree.

However, the preparation of the Cameroonians has been tinted by the late disbursement of funds for their departure and a technical meeting is scheduled on the same day as the beginning of the competition. Contacted on the issue, the president of the Cameroon boxing federation, Mendounga, Bertrand Magloire, said the first two days are reserved for arrivals and that the competition effectively begins on Sunday, September 25, 2011.

The AIBA Men's World Championships is the signature event on the AIBA calendar going back 35 years to its beginnings in 1974 when the AIBA Men's World Championships made its debut in one of the heartlands of boxing in Havana, Cuba. AIBA’s “Road to Dream” programme is benefiting to boxers and coaches from selected AIBA’s National Federations, coming from boxing developing countries to which Cameroon does not belong. Since 2009, AIBA offers prior to each of its World’s Championships, airline tickets and local transportations, accommodations and meals, training infrastructures and equipment, instructors and visa procedures to boxers and coaches who qualify for the ‘Road to Dream’ programme. AIBA fully fund this coverage from the Training Camp to the end of the Championships.
