Yaounde-Ayos: Heavy Rains Cut Off Road

According to the Divisional Officer for Ayos, all travelers from Yaounde to the East Region and vice versa have to use the Obala-Nanga Eboko-Belabo-Bertaoua alternative highway.

The main highway linking Cameroon’s capital, Yaounde, to the East Region – and by extension, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) and the northern regions of the country - has been cut off in a village before Ayos, which is located about 120 km from Yaounde.

According to the local administrator or Divisional Officer, DO, for Ayos, the incident that happened at 12.30 am on Sunday October 15, was the result of heavy rains in the area that led to the concrete culvert ring caving in, reports Cameroon Radio Television, CRTV radio. The DO described the situation as being so serious that the affected portion has been cut into two, “making it impossible even for pedestrians to cross over.”

He has therefore advised all motorists travelling from Yaounde to the East Region through Ayos to instead use the alternative road through Obala, Nanga Eboko and Bertoua or vice versa. Asked how much time he thought it would take before the cut portion is repaired, he said only officials of the Ministry of Public Works could say, given that the problem appears serious enough to take quite some time before traffic is restored.

Only last week, a portion of the Douala-Yaounde highway was almost completely cut off near Edea as a result of heavy rains.
