It is in this light that a one-day round table discussion was organised in Yaounde on Thursday October 13. Organised by Plan Cameroon, it brought together representatives of the Ministries of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation and Public Health and partner organisations. The round table was organised within the framework of the World Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The objective was to present the state of vulnerability of children during crises and disasters in Cameroon, envisage an efficient policy of protection and care of children during period of crises and disasters. The audience listened to testimonies of children who are witnesses cases were children were victims of disasters.
Speaking during the occasion, the Plan Country Director, Famari Baro, said the debate during the round table will awaken the consciences of the public so that a stronger fight will be carried out to ensure prevention and reduction of risks among vulnerable people in general and children in particular. He said Plan Cameroon guarantees the government of Cameroon its infallible support in action taken to meet set objectives. Discussions focused on themes such as the state of crises and disasters in Cameroon, the situation of vulnerable children, caring for children during crisis and disasters, the role and responsibilities of each and everyone, the case of refugee children and the participation of children in the reduction of disasters. Concerning disaster risk reduction, Plan Cameroon in 2009 organised a workshop with its partners to develop local strategies for the prevention of disasters.
Plan Cameroon participated in this year’s celebration through activities organized throughout the national territory such as school parties in the Littoral Region, donation of beds and buckets in the North and East Regions, visits to risk sites (Lake Monoun) in the West Region and round table discussions in other regions.
